Shit go t fixed today.

Kinja'd!!!

I replaced the old beat tie rod ends, & got the broken exhaust flange fixed.

Kinja'd!!!

The exhaust shop I normally go to did it. Old school shop, but a good shop. Pulled up, quiet shop, they got it in the air right away. Said “I can cut the flange off & weld in sleve for $130.” Done. Good quality welds, quick work, reasonable prices. If you need any exhaust work done near Barrie, Ontario go to Grizzly Exhaust.

Getting the bolt to break loose on the tie rod was the worst part. I could not use leverage being inside the wheel well, & had no torch. I put an open end wrench on it, & hit the other end with a 3lb hammer until it moved enough to get a tie rod end off.

Having someone who will do a repair like that is almost as satisfying as replacing the tie rod yourself.

As opposed to the Audi dealer who told my friend that his entire exhaust system had to be replaced for $2000 because it had a broken flex joint.

If you deal with rusted fasteners a lot (given where you live ), get one of these if you can’t afford or have no room for a full size rig.  And also learn some welding.

A local shop wanted $500 to fix it, that was just to replace mid-pipe. I guess driving a 1/2hr out of my way was not that bad. That’s why I always recommend that shop, they will do those little fixes. Too bad there are not many shops like them.

The Rotors are on the list with most of the front end. I still need to replace the hubs, & axles.

yup. In Milwaukee, it was shops run by Mexicans on the South Side that would do those type of fixes.

If you need new axles, consider Raxles, if they make them for your car.

Most axle rebuilds suck because they use inferior neoprene boots (OE is usually thermoplastic).

GM and Ford are the only ones who actually offer OEM NEW axles. Everyone else is just reman.

Do you Krown your car?

I do Krown it, but the previous owner did not.  It’s showing now.

Why would you recommend this over a used setup? I have no knowledge of either but I would love to be able to do amateur hack welds.

No breaker/cheater bar?

Kudos. Tie rods have been one of the most satisfying jobs I have done outside of brakes.

No space in the wheel well to fit one, the 3lb hammer it got.

That just came up first on Google. I was assuming money or space could be a factor hence the small rig.

If you’ve got space, then go for used. Then you can get brand name like Victor. And large tanks. Like below.

Oxy/acet is great for people in the rust belt working on old cars. It’s my favorite last resort for recalcitrant bolts.  You can cut very thick pieces of steel.

Oxy/acet welding is probably the hardest and the hand-eye coord you learn makes TIG easier. MIG is so easy it doesn’t count.
